Brief update: As you can see the project is dormant. I've disabled both anonymous edits and the wiki signup page to curb the spam (now that I finally took the time to read the wonderful MediaWiki manual). Should you want to get yourself an account to this wiki please send me an email (at jaakko (at) opendevelopment (dot) cc) and introduce yourself. --Jaakko Helleranta 15:01, 24 August 2011 (EDT)
Hello World,
Welcome to the Open Development Wiki!
The idea behind the Open Development Wiki and the broader Open Development Initiative has developed over the course of about two years. This all started from coincidental discussions between two people. Details will follow at our (soon to be kicked off) blog at opendevelopment.cc/blog.
Until then, please check out Jaakko's rambling thoughts on Open Development under the title "A Case for Open Development" (http://sn.im/case4opendevelopment) (ver. 0.01 ;) or another, better formulated text, a "Proposal for Initiating the Open Development Wiki" (http://sn.im/odw-proposal).
Please note that while anonymous edits have been disabled (for the time being) to prevent wiki spam you are most welcome to register and join in. Writing with your real name is warmly encouraged (and may be preferred over edits by pseudonyms) fundamental principle of the Open Development Wiki is to not require people to use their real names. There are many good reasons for this and only a very few against, really.
All of your feedback and comments are most welcome!

What is Open Development?
Text draft by Jaakko, perhaps a to-be blog post.
Open Development is "simply" an idea to adapt best practices from "open source minded" projects, initiatives and movements to the context of international/global/economic/sustainable/human/etc development.
On one hand there is nothing new about such idea; not anymore, after dozens of Open initiatives ranging from FLOS software development to various Open Knowledge initiatives to Open Architecture, etc. On the other hand, even now (in September 2010) an Open paradigm for the whole global/etc-development field does not exists (to my knowledge).
This is really interesting as it would seem obvious that an Open initiative would be a "perfect match" in the field where we are talking about dire poverty of billions of people, where we are dealing with deep humanitarian questions and are often talking with bold (rethoric) of the need for empowerment of the people, especially(?) the poor. I mean, when talking with people and reading various articles, books, and other texts it seems to be quite widely accepted that engagement, participation, empowerment, transparency, freedom and efficiency are all seen important and intertwined -- and that openness in its various forms and aspects is a major booster to these important issues.
Furthermore, there are already tens -- most probably hundreds -- of initiatives that are embracing Open or at least significantly more open models, better collaboration, more agile exchange of information, etc.
But a paradigm for Open Development. Not to my knowledge, that is.
So, then what? I don't know. But it would be really neat if some of the people already involved with various open development initiatives as well as people who are not involved with these but care about improving the living conditions and future of the billions of people who have been less fortunate in the material development that the "developed" world has experienced in/since the 20th century.
